Nigeria’s former president, Olusegun Obasanjo, has begun a
mission to introduce African countries to Nigeria’s innovation in bakery,
Cassava Bread.
Mr. Obasanjo, a goodwill ambassador for the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture, IITA, recently took the bread to Tanzania where he publicly munched the bread with the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Mrisho Jakaya Kikwete.

Former President Benjamin Mkapa of the United Republic of
Tanzania also ate the bread for the first time. The leaders supported the
innovation, noting that it would bring several benefits to the continent.
The 40 per cent cassava bread was first developed by IITA in Nigeria, as part of efforts to boost the utilization of cassava and create market for farmers.
President Kikwete after inaugurating the IITA Science Building in Dar es Salaam on Monday commended IITA for the bread technology, saying that the bread had an “excellent” taste.
“There is no difference between this bread and the normal bread we are used to,” he added.

Mr. Obasanjo encouraged the Tanzania President to promote
the use of cassava in confectionaries in his country to transform agriculture.
He noted that the use of cassava flour in bread would stimulate the demand for
the root crop, create jobs and, more importantly, make farmers proud.
Mr. Obasanjo, in 2002 initiated a policy on 10 percent inclusion in bread under “the Presidential Initiative on Cassava,” program. The program which was implemented by IITA and national partners, drove the demand for cassava, increased productivity by about 10 million tons in 6 years, and made Nigeria the top world producer of cassava.

Up To 2000 Soldiers, Fighter Jets Deployed To Borno State.
About 2,000 security operatives and military hardware,
including fighter jets have been deployed to Maiduguri ahead of Tuesday’s
declaration of State of Emergency.
In neighboring Yobe State, it is not clear how many soldiers
were deployed but residents said shortly after the declaration of state of
emergency, stop and search operations have been intensified in the state
capital while movement have been restricted in other places.
Residents said the deployment of the federal troops,
including the army, navy, air force and operatives of the State Security
Service (SSS) began at the weekend.
“We started sensing danger on Saturday when we saw military
trucks conveying soldiers to the Joint Task Force (JTF) headquarters along
Pompomari area,” Usman Jika, a resident of Maiduguri said.
“By Sunday morning, so many roadblocks have sprung up in the
state capital and there was noticeable cordon and search of houses by new faces
(soldiers),” he said.
A resident of Kumshe, one of the red spots in Maiduguri said
his neighbour was beaten to pulp on Sunday when soldiers besieged the areas and
forced all the people out of their houses.
“All the soldiers that came to the neighborhood appeared new
in the town, some of them said it is now time for ‘fire for fire” he said.
Another resident said he saw military aircrafts landing at
the Maiduguri International Airport and the air strip at the Air Force base in
the state capital.
“A lot of fighting equipment have been deployed to
Maiduguri,” Hajja Maimuna, a resident of Gomari, whose house is close to the
Air Force base said.
“We are really terrified because the military operatives
coming to Maiduguri in the last two days far outnumbered those that came during
the previous emergency rule,” she said.
“Even though the state governor has not been removed, which
is good, the truth is that Maiduguri is now a garrison town, full of angry
soldiers who are ready to kill at the slightest provocation. The deployment
will definitely hamper social and economic life of the people,” she said.

Protect The Rights Of Civilians – US Warns Nigerian Government
A top United States official had on Wednesday said that
Nigeria must protect the rights of civilians and avoid any “heavy-handed”
response as it moves against Islamist sect to enforce a state of emergency.
State Department spokesman, Patrick Ventrell said, “We call
on Nigerian officials to ensure that Nigeria’s security forces protect
civilians in any security response in a way that respects human rights and the
rule of law.”
He also urged Nigerian authorities to investigate clashes
between soldiers and Islamist gunmen last month in the town of Baga on Lake
Chad where over 200 lives were lost to ensure that “those responsible are held
accountable.”
It would be recalled that President Goodluck Jonathan issued
an emergency decree late Tuesday, acknowledging for the first time that Boko
Haram militants had “taken over” parts of northern Borno state, the insurgents’
stronghold.
The Military then announced Wednesday that a “massive” troop
deployment was under way.
“Washington is watching how the Nigerian authorities will
handle the state of emergency”, Ventrell said.
“We have made it clear to the Nigerian government that its
heavy-handed response to insecurity in northern Nigeria and the failure to
address human rights violations will potentially affect our ability to provide
security assistance going forward,” he added.
Jonathan said the Boko Haram violence, which has left
thousands dead since 2009, can no longer be treated as “militancy or
criminality.” The latest violence, including the brazen attacks in the
northeast, amounted to “a declaration of war,” he said

How Robbers Supposedly Planned The Biggest Armed Robbery Attack In Nigeria.
Accordinated attempt to carry out a major robbery operation
in Onitsha, Anambra State was recently foiled by officers and men of the
Anambra State Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS).
Amos Chieku, Ndubuisi Uche, Chibuike Alakwachi, Ugochukwu Igbokwe and Nonso are five members of the gang currently assisting police authorities to trace the whereabouts of other members still at large.
A couple of weeks ago, one robbery informant reportedly alerted Uche, popularly called ‘I Chop’ of a planned movement of a large amount of money from Onitsha to an undisclosed destination, apparently by a group of businessmen. The amount involved was such that Uche, 31, alone could not handle.
He promptly invited some ‘tested’ hands in the act of robbery to join him in the ‘business.’ Chieku, alias Danga is based in Abuja, but moves anywhere across the country to perpetrate his crime once he is called upon.
Chieku, 23, is said to be good with guns. He is also a dependable driver. Alakwachi, 21, is based in Lagos and is reported to be a former escapee from prison for similar offence. Nonso is said to be the gang’s armourer and also good with weapons.
Whereas Chieku hails from Enugu State, Uche is a native of Amasiri Afikpo in Ebonyi State. The third member of the gang, Igbokwe is not based in Nigeria. For seven years, he has been living in South Africa.
Igbokwe, 27, and native of Owerri in Imo State, is not gainfully employed in the South African country, but he is occasionally invited home by the gang when there is a ‘business’ considered is requiring an expert touch. Igbokwe is reported to be a professional gun handler at least the kind of guns in the armoury of the Nigerian military.
He is also reported to provide foreign cover for all members of the group. It was for the foiled operation that Igbokwe flew into the country from South Africa last week. So, last Sunday, all members of the gang were scheduled to meet at a hotel in Onitsha from where they would strategise before their final assault the following day, Monday, 6 May, 2013.
Their plan was reportedly to ambush the bullion van moving the cash and intercept the convoy. It was reported that Uche, the alleged gang leader, had instructed that should there be any resistant to their action, his men should not hesitate to ‘waste’ such a person. But the news of the gang’s planned operation got to the notice of the SARS leadership, which promptly put men on alert for the gang.
While waiting for his gang to arrive the hotel, men of the SARS reportedly swooped on Uche and he was promptly arrested. But Uche would not go down alone. So, he promised that he would assist law enforcement agents to get other members of the gang.
So, the police decided to play along while Uche called his partners-in-crime to join him at the hotel. One by one, Chieku, Nonso, Alakwachi and Igbokwe all arrived to be welcome by Uche. To the chagrin of all, they landed in the hands of operatives of SARS team strategically stationed at the hotel. Some of their gang were said to still being awaited after Uche had called them that there was a slight change in time for the operation.
In their confessional statements before Saturday Mirror in Awka, Chieku denied knowledge of the planned attempt to rob that day. Though he confessed to have been an armed robber before, he said he had repented a long time ago.
He claimed he was only bringing his family from Abuja where he had accident on the way with his car. At another breadth, Chieku confessed to being a member of the gang and that it was Uche that introduced him to the ‘deal’ that led to their arrest.
“I know that the game is up, but let I Chop tell you all I know about the business. We all met Uche at Enugu before we came to Onitsha. He was the one that called me that there is business for us at Onitsha,” Chieku added. Nonso, on his part, denied being a robber, but said that he knows Uche and Chieku who used to come and eat in his mother’s canteen in Enugu.
This claim, Uche rejected. Uche, while confessing to his crime, said that all five of them were members of the same gang. He confirmed that Igbokwe flew into the country from Nigeria for the planned operation, while Alakwachi also came from Lagos for the same operation.
When Saturday Mirror asked Uche how it was possible for someone to fly in from South Africa to carry out a robbery operation and also go back to that country, Uche answered, “What are you saying?
How much is a South African ticket when you go for an operation and make N5 million or N10 million. Let me tell you that some of our gang are scattered in Lagos, Abuja and abroad. You contact those ones that you want to be in your team for a particular operation.
The claim that they are not involved in the Onitsha operation that led to our arrest are false. They will not tell you the truth. Some months back, Alakwachi betrayed me by aligning himself with a contact I gave him and I cursed him that he would soon be caught,” Uche said.
But Igbokwe’s claim is different. He said: “I deal in drugs in South Africa. I did not know that they are robbers. I just came home looking for some money to continue my business.
I wanted to dupe Chiewku N300,000, but I was roped into this case.” This was, however, also denied by Uche who said Igbokwe always come from South Africa to rob, stay some time in Lagos and travel back.
A senior member of the SARS who does not want his name in print, said that with the arrest of Uche, there would be a high degree of peace in Onitsha and the entire South East. The police officer claimed Uche has been on the wanted list of the police for a long time ago. “We have been looking for I Chop for a long time now.
There is hardly any serious robbery in Onitsha that Uche would not be part of it. He is such a notorious robber that his name even sends jitters down the spines of security men and other criminals in the state and environs,” he said.

Bayelsa State Reportedly Has The Worst Exam Malpractice Record in Nigeria.
The 2012 Exam Ethics Report, by the Exam Ethics Marshals
International, has identified Bayelsa, Sokoto, Ekiti and Imo, as the first,
second, third and fourth worst states with exam malpractice records.
Bayelsa State which was the worst state in the country had
an Exam Malpractice Index (EMI) of 44.99%; Sokoto State with EMI of 27.9 %;
Ekiti State EMI of 26.69%, and Imo State with EMI of 24%.
According to the report, there was a five percent rise in
examination malpractices in the country from the Nigeria National Exam Ethics
Index (EEI) being at 86 in 2011, to 82 in 2012.
According to the report, the EEI is calculated based on the
composite number of candidates, principals, teachers, supervisors, invigilators
and schools sanctioned for malpractices by public examination bodies for the
period and geopolitical unit under consideration.
“It is the measure of the number of candidates and exam
administrators that respected the rules and regulations of examinations out of
every 100 that participated in such examinations. The inverse, Exam Malpractice
Index (EMI), is the measure of the number of people sanctioned for
malpractices, out of every 100 that participated in the examination,” the
report said.
It named the North-east geopolitical zone as the most
ethics-friendly zone in 2012 with an EEI of 7.05%. The North-central zone came
second with and EEI of 84.09%, while South-west came third with EEI of 83.26.
South-east, North-west and South-south emerged fourth, fifth and sixth
respectively.
Yobe State emerged the 2012 National Exam Ethics Golden
State with Exam Ethics Index of 89.57% while the FCT ranked second with 89.21%
to emerge the 2012 National Exam Ethics Silver state.
Bauchi State ranked third with Exam Ethics Index of 88.51%
to emerge 2012 National Exam Ethics Bronze state.
For the zonal Exam Ethics Golden States, it said FCT, Yobe, Kano, Abia, Oyo and
Edo States ranked number one in Exam Ethics Index in their various zones to
emerge the leader in their respective geopolitical zones.
The group regretted the fact that 18 out of every 100 people
that participated in examinations in Nigeria last year were indicted for
malpractices, which it said were a cause for serious concern, despite slight
improvement registered between 2011 and 2012.
The statistics also showed that Bayelsa State has the
highest number of de-recognised schools(13), followed by Delta
(12), Ondo (eight), Kaduna (seven), Cross River (seven), Imo (seven),
Plateau (six), Rivers (six) Kogi (five) Lagos (five) Nasarawa (five), Sokoto
(four) and Anambra (four). No school was de-recognised in Taraba, Ebonyi,
Borno, Niger, Adamawa, FCT and Yobe.
It indicated that South-south has the highest number of
de-registered schools (35.1 percent), followed by South-west (19.3 per cent),
North-central (15.7 percent), North-west (15 percent), South-east (13.2
percent), and North East (1.7 percent).
“Progress in the education sector is paralysed by the iron
grip of examination malpractice, which has metamorphosed into virtually
risk-free highly lucrative organised criminal activity controlled by
syndicates, some of whose members are embedded in ministries, institutions and
examination bodies as workers.
“Instead of being centres of excellence, some educational
institutions have become places where youths are weaned on diets of fraud and
dishonesty to breed ready recruits for corruption. A good number of principals,
lecturers, teachers, supervisors, invigilators and examination administrators
entrusted with responsibility to protect integrity of the examination process
are the very people that aid, abet and collude to perpetrate malpractice for
monetary and other inducements,” the report said.

Up To 70 Policemen Reportedly Killed At Nassarawa State Massacre.
On Tuesday May 7th, Nassarawa State Commissioner of Police
sent police officers, SSS and Civil Defense personnel to arrest the cult leader
of a notorious militia group called 'Ombatse' (a cult group of the Eggon people
of Nasarawa State) at Assakyo Village in Lafia, Nassarawa state. (Ombatse in
Eggon language means “time has come”).
The state government wanted to arrest the chief priest
because the group had been causing security concerns in the state.
Unfortunately for the police officers sent to pick the man up, as they
approached the Ombatse Shrine in a forest, members of the militia group who had
laid ambush for them attacked and killed plenty of them. Many of the police
officers were burnt beyond recognition.
It was reported by the police command that only 17 out of
the 90 police officers, minus SSS and NSCDC personnel, who went on the mission
returned...and all with various degrees of wounds.
Also, out of the 11 police patrol vans used to convey the

militia group.
The Nassarawa Commissioner of Police explains why they wanted to arrest the Ombatse cult leader:
"The militia group called Ombatse was going about in mosques and churches forcing all people of Eggon extraction in and out of Lafia to drink a particular concoction prepared from herbs and anyone who failed to comply was beaten up and harassed. It was agreed at the state security meeting that the Ombatse Shrine priest be arrested to stop such activities.”

Photos: Boko Haram Raid Borno Town, Leave 55 People Dead.
Suspected members of the Nigerian Islamist sect Boko Haram
raided the northeastern town of Bama on Tuesday, leaving 55 people dead, the
military said on Tuesday.
Boko Haram gunmen killed 22 police officers, 14 prison
officials, two soldiers and four civilians, while 13 of the group’s own members
died, military spokesman Sagir Musa said.
Gunmen freed 105 prison members during the raid which began at around 5 a.m and lasted almost 5hrs, Musa said. Bama’s police station, military barracks and government buildings were burned to the ground, witnesses saw.
Bama is a small, remote town in northeastern Borno state, where Boko Haram first launched an uprising in 2009.
The Boko Haram sect and offshoots such as the al Qaeda-linked Ansaru, as well as associated criminal networks, pose the main threat to stability in Africa’s top energy producer.
Western governments are increasingly concerned about Nigerian militants linking up with other jihadist groups in the West African region.
Boko Haram wants to carve out an Islamic state in a country split roughly equally between Christians and Muslims. One of its chief demands is that its imprisoned members and family members are released and it has carried out several prison breaks.
Violence in Nigeria’s north has shown no signs of letting up. Clashes between Islamists and a multinational force from Nigeria, Niger and Chad killed dozens of people last month.
A senator who visited the site said 228 people were killed, but the military puts the figure at 37.

Obama To Visit Nigeria May 28
At last the President of the United States, Barack Obama,
would visit Nigeria on 28 May, 2013, as part of a three-nation tour of Africa,
ending speculation of the Obama scorn with the flawed elections in 2007 that
brought Umaru Yar’Adua to the Presidency.
Seen as long overdue but coming at a time when security is the number one item on the country’s agenda, the 44th President of the United States is expected to parley with President Jonathan on how to tackle the niggling problems of insecurity, the economy and trade relations between both nations. President Obama would be interested in hearing President’s Jonathan’s plan to control the Boko Haram insurgents who he plans to offered amnesty, even as the sect continues to slay hundreds in their quest to end western education in the country apart from kidnapping foreigners for ransom.
The growing bases of Al Quaeda, a long term enemy of America and its allies, along the Lake Chad region resulting from their recent dislodgement from Mali may find space on their agenda.
Both men are likely to contemplate the resurgence of Niger Delta militancy, which had simmered with the granting of amnesty by former President Yar’Adua. On the political side, they may weigh the propriety of a Jonathan candidacy in 2015 and the implications for democracy not only for Nigeria, but also for the African continent as well as the implication of good governance as exemplified by Nigeria for the stability of the sub-region. It is speculated that both presidents would broach issues on economic co-operation not least the upbeat forecasts of the emergence of Nigeria as an economic force, what with the country’s latitude for growth.
America would be interested in a partnership that would engender a favourable outcome for both countries whose bilateral trade hit $5 trillion in the first quarter of 2012.
It would be an opportunity for President Jonathan to engage Obama on the US exploitation of Shale gas projected to cut a quarter US imports of Nigeria’s oil by the end of the year. They could discuss how Nigeria can benefit from alternative energy programme of the United States. It would give President Jonathan a chance to see how the AGOA programme can be improved to favour Nigeria’s businesses, especially the SMEs.
Obama’s planned session with businessmen while in the country assures that there is yet scope for improving business and trade relations between both countries. Obama’s visit is believed to be five years late given that he was billed to have visited the country in his first term in office, especially when he visited other African countries, including Ghana, which is only 30 minutes away from Nigeria by flight.
Of that snob, Nobel Literature Prize winner, Professor Wole Soyinka, said, “If Obama decides to grace Nigeria with his presence, I will stone him. The message he is sending by going to Ghana is so obvious, is so brilliant that he must not render it flawed by coming to Nigeria any time soon.”

Blackberry May Face Ban In Nigeria.
Blackberry services could be at risk of being banned in the
country as a new regulation by the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC,
will run counter to the technical operating standards of the phone’s distinct
network.
Our source gathered yesterday that the telecoms regulator was working on a regulation, which would make it mandatory for any licensee in the nation’s telecoms market to provide access to its communications facilities for necessary interception by the law enforcement agencies.
To be called ‘Lawful interception of communications regulations”, the regulation, which is currently at the draft stage, is based on the need to provide a legal and regulatory framework for the lawful interception of communications in Nigeria and the collection and disclosure of intercepted communication.
It will also specify the nature and types of communications to be intercepted; prescribe penalties for noncompliance with the regulations; provide a notification to the commission of all warrants issued, amended, renewed or cancelled under the regulations as well as ensure the privacy of subscribers as contained in the Nigerian constitution. It was gathered that Section 13 of the regulation Protected or Encrypted Communications will run counter to the technical operations of Blackberry.
By their designs and unlike other mobile devices, Blackberry messages are encrypted and where criminal investigation is required, the law enforcement agents will face denial of access to Blackberry network.
Specifically, Section 13 of the regulation empowers the National Security Adviser, NSA, and the State Security Service, SSS, to request the disclosure of protected or encrypted communications.
According to the regulation: “Where the communications intercepted is an encrypted or protected communication, the licensee shall provide the National Security Adviser and the State Security Service with the key, code or access to the protected or encrypted communication.
“Where the key or code is in the possession of another person, the licensee shall be under an obligation to request such other person to disclose the key or code to the National Security Adviser and the State Security Service for the purpose of complying with a warrant.” The regulation, under Section 20, also specifies the penalties for contravention.
“If a licensee or any of its officers, manager, chief executive officer, secretary or other similar officers of the licensee required under this regulation fails to comply with the provision of this regulations, such licensee or its officers shall be liable to a fine of N5m. If such an offence is continuing, such a licensee or officer shall be liable to a daily default penalty of N500,000.” The regulation clearly states that the commission may revoke the licence of the licensee for failure to comply with the regulation.
“The commission shall give a prior written notice to the licensee of such revocation, not less than 30 days to the withdrawal of the licensee.” Also, the commission may institute an action for non-compliance through injunction or specific performance or any or such other judicial means of enforcing a duty or obligation imposed on a licensee pursuant to the regulations.
However, Blackberry messenger, email and web services are sent over an encrypted network and the company maintains a strict policy of non-disclosure of pass codes or keys to government officials.
Last year, officials of Blackberry said the Blackberry users in Nigeria were about three million and these individuals face an uncertain future in case of possible revocation of Blackberry licence by the regulator, given its stern position not to release the key to its encrypted network to any government officials.
Blackberry has continued to face widespread concern over its strong data encryption, which is beloved by corporate customers eager to guard secrets, but troublesome for some governments in the Middle East and Asia that it could be used by militants to avoid detection.
It will be recalled that between 2010 and 2011, Indian government threatened to ban Blackberry over the phone manufacturer’s failure to provide access to customers’ corporate e-mails to the government.
The Indian government request for access to the Blackberry network was part of a broader effort by the country’s intelligence to monitor security threats made via mobile phones and the internet. Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates had also in 2010 threatened to cut off Blackberry services due to its encryption policy.
National Mirror also gathered that the NCC’s current move was in line with strategic measures of the Federal Government to ensure maximum national security by providing a legal framework that empowers the law enforcements agencies to access any licensed communication network in the country.

Students Protest Mass UTME Failure In Kano.
Many students believed to have taken part in
the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) yesterday converged
on the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) in Kano on motorcycles
around noon and carried placards and green leaves to show their anger.
The spokesman of the Haruna Maidabam described the
withholding of results as an attempt to deny them an opportunity to further
their education.
He said as many as 10,000 candidates who took part in the
examination are yet to get their results.
Maidabam said when the results were released last week, they
went to the zonal office of Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board in Kano
(JAMB) to complain but were directed to go and repeat the thumb printing for
verification.
“There is no reason for any verification of thumb- print,”
he reportedly said.
The JAMB Zonal Coordinator, Hajiya Karimatu Abubakar, spoke
with the press admitting there were some glitches during the conduct of the
examinations.
She assured that the issues will be resolved.

MTN's 'Saka' Advert Violates NCC Rules - Etisalat
Etisalat Nigeria has said the MTN's new advert on Mobile
Number Portability (MNP) violated the Nigerian Communications Commission and
Advertisement Practitioners Council of Nigeria's rules and that both regulatory
agencies should wield their sticks on the dominant telecoms company.
Etisalat's director, brands & communications, Enitan
Denloye, told Daily Trust that the MNP 'Saka' advert currently run by MTN is a
violation of laid down rules by the NCC and APCON and Etisalat had engaged both
organizations to address the issue. Responding to a question sent to her
through email, Denloye said Etisalat is an ethical company that executes its
business strategies within the rules and regulations of the industry and would
not want a rival company got her into regulator's trouble.
"As an organization, our core values are passion for
excellence, integrity, growing and empowering people. We have empowered and
will continue to empower upcoming artistes and stars such as 'Saka', who we
have featured in several adverts in the past.
"We believe the MNP adverts currently run by MTN is a
violation of laid down rules by the NCC and APCON and we have engaged both
organizations to address this issue and promote a competitive environment for
all operators. "Etisalat remains a customer focused organization, and will
continue to promote rising stars, deliver innovative products and services as
well as superior quality network", she said.
But MTN said it has not done anything wrong as far as the
'Saka' ad is concern.
One of the MTN officials, who spoke with Daily Trust on the
issue yesterday, said the ad in question was vetted by regulators before it was
released.
The official, who pleaded not to be named, added that any
operator could decide to use any celebrity it deems fit for its ad and
promotions.
He said: "I believe the regulators are also watching
the whole drama; and we at MTN believe that they would do justice because we
have contradicted or gone against any regulatory guidelines."
He also told Daily Trust that MNP would truly intensify the
rivalry in the telecoms industry.

I Have Murdered Poverty – Nollywood Actor, Saka
Hafiz Oyetoro’s controversial move from Etisalat to MTN as a
brand face seems to have changed his fortune for good.
South Africa-based scholar, Prof. Kole Omotosho, and
lecturer at Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education, Hafiz Oyetoro, do not
belong to the same generation. The distance between Nigeria and SA also implies
that they cannot be meeting each other constantly. Yet, they both have
something in common.
They have the enviable record of successfully combining their work as lecturers with advertising. Apart from the fact that Omotosho is a writer, best known for his controversial novel about Nigeria – Just Before Dawn – he has made a name for himself in SA where his face has graced several advert bill boards. The latest is the one in which he is advertising for Fidelity Bank Plc.
Also, both men are household names in SA and Nigeria. While Omotosho is almost worshipped as a cult hero called Yebo Gogo, Oyetoro is popularly known as Saka among TV viewers in Nigeria.
Incidentally, at a time when Omotosho’s 70th birthday is still the talk of the literary community, Oyetoro, who has also established himself as an actor and a popular face on TV, also recently stirred the scene. This is courtesy of his ‘shocking’ appearance in the MTN’s I don port advert, a commercial that many have described as an excellent one – not minding the fact that some believe it is a below-the-belt jab for Etisalat, the telecoms company for which he worked as an advertising model for some time.
Ever since Oyetoro’s crossover, in which he is required to lead a major advertising campaign to drive the network portability initiative by Nigerian Communication Commission, Nigerians have not stopped talking about him and his amazing rise to fame and riches.
The deal is believed to be worth about N20m, which is enough to give the hardworking and self-effacing actor a clean break from poverty. But while the man himself has declined to comment on the positive twist in his fortune, he was recently quoted in THE NEWS as saying that he had finally conquered poverty.
“To the glory of God, level don change. Let me put it like that. I believe that in the nearest future, level will finally change. But now, level don dey change. I have murdered poverty and God has finally murdered it for me. I am no longer poor, but very comfortable,” he said.
In a telephone interview with our correspondent on Tuesday, he said he was not ready to talk about his new contract with the telecommunications company.
“For now, I don’t want to say anything. I promise you that I will talk at the appropriate time,” he said.
But when asked if his new responsibilities as a brand ambassador for MTN would not clash with his job at the Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education, he replied, “I am a responsible civil servant. My duty is to teach other people’s children well, just as I would expect others to teach mine. So I cannot abandon my job. I assure you, everything has been taken care of.”
A few years ago, little was known about Oyetoro.
Although he studied Theatre Arts at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ago Iwoye worked as a part-time lecturer at the Olabisi Onabanjo University before moving to Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education in Ijanikin, Oyetoro remained relatively obscure for a long while.
In those days, he managed to appear in a few insignificant theatre productions, in which he played mostly comic roles. It took a while before the qualities that would raise him a notch higher than most of his peers began to manifest.
First, Nollywood came calling with an opportunity to establish himself as a regular face on the lighted screen. Oyetoro, who was burning up with a desire to prove himself, had to grab it. Still, a few years later and with appearances in hundreds of Nollywood films to his credit, he was far from hitting the limelight.
Then another opportunity presented itself. This time, it came from Centrespread, an advertising agency. The agency wanted him to be their model for its advertising campaigns with Etisalat. The deal clicked and Oyetoro’s transformation began in earnest. That was when, for the purpose of the campaigns, he assumed a new identity: he became known ‘Saka’, a character that he helped create along with other Thespians in 2004 for a TV comedy series titled ‘House A-part’.
Eventually, Oyetoro became the face of Etisalat campaigns. Within a short time, Saka had become a household name and Oyetoro could look forward to a brighter future free of the clutches of poverty.
In an interview published on the Internet, the actor cum lecturer admitted that he was involved in a bitter struggle against poverty for a long time.
“Poverty was my friend and family for a long time. As you sit with me here side by side, that was how I was sitting with poverty in the past,” he said.
The struggle against poverty had also cost him the opportunity to settle down early enough in life. “There was a lady who disqualified me because I didn’t have a car. But, thank God, I eventually got a wife who genuinely loves me and who I genuinely love,” he said.

May D Features P-Square In New Album.
Late August last year, pop singer Akinmayokun ‘May D’
Awodumila got the shock of his life when he learnt he had been dropped from
Square records (P-Square record label) due to irreconcilable differences, he screamed
blue murder, threatened litigation and countered by launching his own outfit
Confam Entertainment; releasing singles and videos. Today, however, these two

Prophet Drowns At Baptism Pool.
Bulawayo police have clarified that a man who drowned at a
baptism pool in Pumula South last month was not a member of Prophet Thabiso
Ngwenya's church as they initially reported.
The police said Ngwenya, arguably Bulawayo's most popular prophet, was not there at the baptism ceremony and the man is believed to be a "prophet" who was conducting his own baptism ceremony.
Initially, police said they suspected that the man had drowned while being baptised by Ngwenya.
Bulawayo provincial police spokesman Inspector Mandlenkosi Moyo identified the man who drowned at the pool as Selby Chikowora (22), believed to be a prophet from another apostolic church.
"He slid into the pool where he was baptising several people and drowned. It is not clear whether he belonged to Prophet Thabiso Ngwenya's church, but he drowned at the very pools where Ngwenya baptises his people," Moyo said.
Ngwenya's lawyers Moyo and Nyoni Legal Practitioners said neither Ngwenya nor prophets from his church had baptised anyone on the fateful day.
"Our client has a church, which was awarded land by local authorities. He erected a baptism pool there and that is where all his baptism services are held," the lawyers said.
The lawyers said the reports were likely to cause alarm among the popular prophet's "local and international" clients.

Photos: 3 Missing Women Found Alive After 10 Years.
Amanda Berry was last seen after finishing her shift at a
Burger King in Cleveland in 2003. It was the eve of her 17th birthday.
Georgina "Gina" DeJesus disappeared nearly a year later, in April 2004. She was 14.
Michele Knight vanished in 2002, at age 19, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer newspaper.
But all three were found alive in a home in a Cleveland neighborhood Monday night, police announced in a development hailed as a miracle by their families.
"Help me, I am Amanda Berry," the young woman told police in a frantic 911 call from a neighbor's house. "I've been kidnapped, and I've been missing for 10 years. And I'm here, I'm free now."
Police swiftly moved in on the house where the three women said they had been held and later arrested a 52-year-old man, identified as a former school bus driver. Two others, identified as his brothers, ages 50 and 54, also have been arrested, Deputy Police Chief Ed Tomba told reporters late Monday. Police believe only the middle brother lived at the home, he said.
The men are being held in the city jail awaiting charges. An FBI team is collecting evidence in the house.
"This is a great, great outcome that we have them still with us," Tomba said. "It's just truly, truly amazing and it's a blessing to the community and to the members of the police department and their families that they're alive. I can't tell you how happy we are."
Those feelings were echoed at Cleveland's Metro Health Medical Center where the three women and a fourth person were treated before being released Tuesday morning.
"This isn't the ending we usually hear to these stories, so we're very happy," said Dr. Gerald Maloney, an emergency room physician there. "We're very happy for them."
A fourth person had been treated at the hospital. Maloney would not identify that person, but witnesses said Berry, who escaped from the house with the help of a neighbor, had a young child with her.

Yabatech Rector In Multi-Million Naira Fraud
After amassing several thousands of naira on hotel bills for guests, Kudirat Oladipo, the Rector of Yaba College of Technology, Yabatech, faced a prickly school accountant who required proof the visitors were not Mrs. Oladipo’s private callers, before making payment.
“Please provide documents and /or explanations to establish the nexus between the individuals who incurred the bills and official functions or business of the college,” the official wrote in an internal memo to his boss.
Mrs. Ladipo overruled the demand, and almost effortlessly secured clearance. But her staff say it was a handy opportunity for the Rector, long suspected of cornering school funds to treat her private guests to lavish reception, to dispel the concerns. In one year, according to documents seen by PREMIUM TIMES and interviews with officials, Mrs. Oladipo spent N15 million in accumulated costs including hotel bills on such controversial guests. The spending fall amongst a raft of documented financial abuses against the Rector, which have triggered multiple investigations, one by a government panel, and two others by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, and the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences commission, ICPC.
The allegations Officials at the nation’s premier tertiary institution, who would only speak on anonymity, speak figuratively of the school’s academic excellence and financial probity now residing in the gutters; as Mrs. Ladipo spearheads a regime of desperate financial malfeasance driven by a criminal make-hay-while-the-sun-shines mentality. Weeks of PREMIUM TIMES investigation gives weight to that claim. A detailed petition sent to the ICPC and the EFCC contains a long list of alleged financial recklessness, utter disregard of extant Civil Service rules, cover-up, nepotism, contract splitting, as well as lobbying to truncate the conversion of the college into a full-fledged university.
Questionable Generator contract Contrary to federal procurement regulations, in March 2010, Mrs. Oladipo unilaterally approved the purchase of a 650 KVA generator from Cummins Limited for N24 million and, separately awarded another N1.2 million contract for the installation of the generator. In her dispatch to the College’s Governing Council, the Rector claimed the need for the contract was urgent, requesting she be granted an anticipatory approval. However, documents seen by this website show that the Rector only filed the request long after submitting a letter to Cummins Limited for the supply of the plant.
In hunt for the deal, Mrs. Oladipo also brushed aside the institution’s tender board, which is the approving authority for such procurements. Despite the governing council holding several meetings after March, the purchase of the generator was only formally reported 15 months after the purchase – in July 2011. The reason for the hasty approach to the contract, with apparent violations of federal procurement regulations, only became clear when Zenith Bank donated an identical 650KVA generator to the college. It turned out the bank purchased the same plant make for N17 million- N7 million less than what the school paid at the instance of the boss.
For Mrs. Oladipo, the power generators do not merely produce electricity; they also bring illicit wealth as shown in other violations. On May 18, 2010, again flouting all known stipulations, and over the head of the tenders board, she approved an outrageous N9.5 million to be paid to Cummins limited (her preferred supplier) for the repair of a 1.5 MVA generator.
The generator broke down shortly after the repair and later, stopped working all together. Two other instances show how college funds were allegedly cornered by the Rector: on May 14, 2010, without recourse to appropriate financial negotiation and going over the head of other principal officers of the college, she leased a generator for N1.8 million; and on July 13, 2012, hired some for N2.5 million. An obviously aggrieved official, listed as DOW&S (believed to be the Director of Works and Services) on one of the memos reviewed by PREMIUM TIMES, rebuked the transaction. “I have no document whatsoever to the effect that a generator was leased and the terms. By virtue of my responsibility, I ought to be privileged to the terms and conditions of the lease,” the official said.
One source said the rector often boasts of having the institution’s governing council in her pocket. Once, when challenged about her unrestrained financial recklessness, she retorted saying she did “PR” for members of the governing council. A new governing council has however been appointed for the institution, like other federal polytechnics, by President Goodluck Jonathan. Mrs. Oladipo said she is a victim of witch-hunt and dismissed the petitions against her as the handiwork of those opposed to her securing a second term in office. However, she did not respond to specific allegations when approached by PREMIUM TIMES.
The college’s spokesperson, Kunle Adams, after requesting for a week to come up with a “satisfactory response” to the allegations, asked for more time at the expiration of the initial schedule, claiming the Rector was away on official duties. Over two weeks later, he is yet to respond. But if arguments about tenure could wade off concerns about the Rector’s financial conduct, they appear wanting in the face of far more serious misdeeds. “College guests” Mrs. Oladipo loves the good life, and, her associates who fear being named, say she often spends worthy drinking moments relishing her brandy and beer in the company of male companions in luxury hotels in Lagos.
After just a year in office, she allegedly incurred and forced the college to pay personal hotel bills in excess of N15 million. Some of the receipts seen my PREMIUM TIMES show that she kept and hosted personal friends and relatives that she loosely described as “college guests” in posh hotels such as the Lagos Airport hotel and Protea Hotel, Ikeja. Some of her regular guests are Senator Shola Ben, one Kenneth Gbagi and Professor Adams Adass. But a close look at some of the hotel bills indicates that these may be spurious names due to the obvious irregularities of the signatures of these individuals.
Unexpended travel allowances Also, the Rector has used local and foreign trips to corner public funds, according to the documents and the school’s staff. Many of such trips are for purported international conferences and seminars she never attends and hardly refunds the money. If she pays, they come after prolonged periods.
On 4 October, 2011, she was given N1.18 million on her request to present a paper at a conference in Bonn, Germany. Mrs. Oladipo never attended the said conference and the money disbursed was never returned, according to documents available to this website. Again, in July 2012, she requested to attend another conference in United Kingdom, and was paid N2.5 million for the trip. She never attended the conference, nor was the fund refunded.
She collected another N1.1 million for an international conference in Berlin. In keeping with her style, she did not attend the conference and the money was never returned to the coffers of the institution. In May 2011, she was given N3.9 million to cover the cost of her vacation in New York, USA with her husband. To retire the amount, she presented a bill from Emmanuella Travelling Agency.
But instead of the name of her husband, Adebayo Ladipo, as her vacationer, the bill bore a fictitious name, Ladi Ladipo, as that of her husband. She did not travel for the vacation and the money was never returned. She did not return the N1.8 million she collected for a leadership and management training in Galilee, Israel, which she didn’t attend until 18 months later. She apparently did not limit this sharp practice to international trips; she also made a killing from local trips.
In June 2010 she drew N450, 000.00 for an official assignment in Abuja and Kaduna. She did not travel as she claimed and the money was never returned to the institution. She even duplicated a claim for travel expenditure to Abuja in another instance. After collecting money for air tickets, airport taxis, duty tour allowances and running cost allowances for meetings at Federal Ministry of Education, Abuja, she also approved money for a driver, car and fuel for the same trip.
The total cost incurred by her for this trip was N484, 000. An incredulous official wondered if she travelled by air and road at the same time. A source, who didn’t want to be named, said the Minister of Education, Rukaya Rufia, who is a personal friend of the rector, was making efforts to shield her from the government probe panel. “The minister is trying to play down on the petition,” the source said. “Due to the interference of the minister a fresh panel has been constituted after the first one was sabotaged.”
Media aide to the minister, Aliyu Othman, did not return several calls made to his mobile phone. Cover-up of cronies Mrs. Oladipo is also accused of shielding cronies within the college accused of abuse of office or corruption. Notable is the mismanagement of the college run YCT Consult Limited. She has blatantly refused to investigate the charges of corruption levelled against the manager of YTC Consult, Moruf Adebakin. Indeed, to the chagrin of other staff of the institution, she recommended and made Mr. Adebakin Deputy Rector (Admin).
In another instance, a lecturer, Mr. Agbadaola who was found guilty of stealing the institution’s surveying equipment and recommended for dismissal, was pardoned and mere told to return the stolen equipment. Also Mr O. V. Atere who was found guilty of defrauding an HND II student was never punished as recommended by the college’s Senior Staff Investigation Committee (SSIC) but instead received a scholarship and leave of absence to study in the United Kingdom. She is also accused of doing everything to frustrate the elevation of the college into a full-fledged university.
Officials of the school said she is bound to lose her position if that happens as she does not meet the minimum requirement to emerge as the Vice-Chancellor of a university. Folu Olamiti, spokesperson of the ICPC demanded more confirmation that the petition against the rector has been received by the commission. He, however, said the ICPC does not make public statements of cases it is investigating. Wilson Uwujaren, spokesperson for the EFCC, also asked for more time to confirm if his agency has received the petition against the rector.

At a meeting with Nigerian Canadian association, Vice President Namadi Sambo revealed that the Federal Government has approved the sum of $3.7 billion (about 581 billion naira) to improve power transmission in a bid to increase the total grid generation to 20,000MW.
A statement by the spokesman to the Vice President, Alhaji Umar Sani, noted that the President Jonathan administration was committed to the provision of the necessary infrastructure and that efforts are being exerted in the areas of power supply, transportation, aviation, ICT, agriculture, provision of affordable healthcare services, addressing the educational advancement issues and the provision of good governance.
At the interactive section, the Vice President took time to explain the happenings in Nigeria in terms of Infrastructural as well as social development.
He also appreciated the contributions of Nigerians living abroad to the country’s development, saying that it was in recognition of their contributions that a diaspora bond of 1 billion naira was set up.
He urged Nigerians living in Canada to key into the laudable initiative, and also called on citizens living overseas to come home and contribute to the country’s development.
I hope he’s not inviting them home to be harassed by terrorists and kidnappers, he better have something good in store.
We hope the $3.7 billion will go to the right place, we are not fans of redirection of funds.

[VIDEO] Justin Bieber attacked on stage in Dubai by crazed fan
Another day, another eventful occurrence in Justin Bieber’s Believe World Tour. This time Biebs had a lucky escape as a crazed fan stormed the stage at his Dubai concert, knocking a piano off the stage before being tackled by security.
Justin was at the piano singing ‘Believe’ when the man stormed on stage and grabbed Justin from behind and knocked the piano off the stage in the scuffle. The piano was not used for the rest of the show but Justin finished his number regardless, taking just a three-minute break before completing the rest of the show.
The man was detained by security following the incident, and they claimed he was just an over-zealous fan rather than someone trying to cause harm to Justin.
The attack is just the latest in a string of crazy events over the course of the tour – including Justin losing it at photographers in London and getting his pet capuchin monkey confiscated in Germany after he smuggled it in on a private jet.
In recent weeks it seems Justin has rekindled his romance with Selena Gomez, even getting a tattoo which looks suspiciously like Selena on his arm. The couple posted a cute snap of them cuddled up together on Twitter before quickly deleting it again, keeping the nature of their relationship a mystery. In any case, we hope the rest of the tour goes more smoothly, Justin!
Newlywed, 4 Others Die When Limo Bursts Into Flames On San Francisco Bridge
A stretch limousine taking nine women to a bachelorette party erupted in flames, killing five of the passengers, including the bride-to-be, said authorities and the mother of one of the survivors.
The limo caught fire around 10 p.m. Saturday on one of the busiest bridges on San Francisco Bay, California Highway Patrol officer Art Montiel said.
Five of the women were trapped, but the four other women escaped after the vehicle came to a stop on the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge, the patrol said. The driver of the limo — 46-year-old Orville Brown of San Jose — was the only person to get out unhurt. Attempts to reach him for comment were unsuccessful.
Investigators haven’t determined what sparked the fire, but the highway patrol said the white stretch limo became engulfed in flames after smoke started coming out of the rear of the vehicle.
A photo taken by a witness and broadcast on KTVU-TV showed flames shooting from the back.
